SUBJECT:  Establishment of the Center for Comparative Immigration
                   Studies

Following consultation with the Academic Senate and campus administrative officials, I am pleased to announce the establishment of the Center for Comparative Immigration Studies as an Organized Research Unit reporting to Vice Chancellor Richard Attiyeh. Professor Wayne Cornelius will serve as its first Director.

The Center for Comparative Immigration Studies (CCIS) is an interdisciplinary, multinational research center devoted to comparative work on international migration and refugee movements. Its main intellectual agenda is to systematically compare the U.S. immigration experience-historical and contemporary-with that of labor-importing countries in other regions (especially Asia-Pacific, Latin America, and Western Europe). CCIS researchers also examine economic, social, and political linkages between immigrant-receiving and immigrant-sending countries around the world. The Center conducts multi-year research projects; holds research conferences, workshops, and seminars; hosts predoctoral and postdoctoral visiting research fellows; provides research opportunities for advanced undergraduates; publishes anthologies and monographs; maintains a global electronic network of immigration researchers and research centers; and disseminates information on international population movements to the general public. Membership in the Center is open to all interested faculty members and research scientists/scholars.

Professor Cornelius may be reached at wcornelius@ucsd.edu, mail code 0510, telephone 47852.
