SUBJECT:  Appointment of Campus Risk Manager

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Jon Schmidt as Campus Risk Manager. The Risk Management Office oversees general liability, employment liability and workers' compensation claims. Mr. Schmidt will also manage the occupational health services group in Environment, Health and Safety. Mr. Schmidt assumed the duties of Campus Risk Manager on an interim basis in October, 2001. Mr. Schmidt will assume leadership for risk management after more than ten years experience in general safety management in EH&S. Mr. Schmidt has built an effective accident and illness prevention program at UCSD, which supports the lowest accident rate, and thus the lowest workers' compensation payroll tax, in the UC system.

Mr. Schmidt received his Bachelor of Science degree from San Diego State University, and is currently certified as a Risk Manager by the Insurance Institute of America.
