CHANCELLOR'S CHALLENGE 5K RUN/WALK
PLANNING COMMITTEE

October 1, 2002

ALL ACADEMICS AND STAFF AT UCSD (including UCSD Healthcare)
ALL STUDENTS AT UCSD

SUBJECT:  Chancellor's Challenge 5K Run/Walk for Scholars

Chancellor Robert Dynes will kick off Homecoming Weekend by leading the seventh annual Chancellor's Challenge 5-K Run/Walk for Scholars on Friday, October 18, running a course through campus, including Library Walk, to raise scholarship support for our students. Since he first launched the event in 1996, the Chancellor's Challenge has raised $650,000 for nearly 400 undergraduate scholarships. This fall we were able to award sixty-seven scholarships to outstanding UCSD students as a result of last year's proceeds. We look forward to building on that success on Friday, October 18th. We invite all staff, faculty, students, alumni and friends in the community to join us for this exciting event.

Where and When?
The Chancellor's Challenge starts and ends on the North Campus Field, adjacent to RIMAC. Check-in begins at 10:30 A.M. The Run/Walk starts at 12:15 P.M. with lunch being provided by Papa John's Pizza.

What's the Challenge?

The Chancellor will personally donate $25 to UCSD undergraduate scholarships for every person who beats him.

Are there other group competitions?

Associated Students vs. Chancellor Dynes

Here are the stakes: If the AS President, Jenn Brown, beats the Chancellor, the Chancellor will donate funds towards the AS BBQ. If the Chancellor beats the AS President, the AS President will roll up her sleeves, get wet and soapy, and wash the Chancellor's car.

Professor Frances Dynes Hellman Challenge

Professor Frances Dynes Hellman will donate $25 to UCSD undergraduate scholarships for every woman who beats her!

Michael Robertson of REEF and Lindows.com (Formerly of MP3)

Michael will pay $25 toward undergraduate scholarships for every person who finishes ahead of him!

You're Not a Runner? No Problem

The Chancellor's Challenge is a "walk" as much as it is a "run." You do not need to be a runner or have athletic abilities to participate. You don't even need to cross the finish line. The point is to participate to the best of your abilities, have fun and help support UCSD's outstanding students. Special accommodations may be provided to individuals with a disability by contacting Ken Grosse at 858-534-4211 to discuss requests for alternative accessible arrangements or accommodations.
