ALL ACADEMICS AND STAFF AT UCSD (including UCSD HEALTHCARE)

SUBJECT:  Chancellor's Challenge 5K Run/Walk
                     http://www.ucsd.edu/5k

In the spirit of broad campus involvement in the Chancellor's Challenge 5-K Run/Walk for Scholars, I am approving two hours of administrative leave with pay on October 18th, the day of the event. Supervisors may allow two hours of release time for staff to participate when the absence does not infringe upon the performance of required job duties.

Since I first launched the event in 1996, the Chancellor's Challenge has raised $650,000 for nearly 400 undergraduate scholarships. This fall we were able to award sixty-seven scholarships to outstanding UCSD students as a result of last year's proceeds. We look forward to building on that success on Friday, October 18th.

What's the Challenge?

I will personally donate $25 to UCSD undergraduate scholarships for every person who beats me.

Any other challenges?

Associated Students vs. Chancellor Dynes

Here are the stakes: If the AS President, Jenn Brown, beats the Chancellor, the Chancellor will donate funds toward the AS BBQ. If the Chancellor beats the AS President, the AS President will roll up her sleeves, get wet and soapy, and wash the Chancellor's car.

Professor Frances Dynes Hellman Challenge

Professor Frances Dynes Hellman will donate $25 to undergraduate scholarships for every woman who beats her!

Michael Robertson of REEF and Lindows.com (formerly of MP3)

Michael will pay $25 toward undergraduate scholarships for every person who finishes ahead of him!

The Chancellor's Challenge 5K Run/Walk will start at 12:15 p.m. from the North Campus Field, adjacent to RIMAC, and continue along a course that weaves through campus. Please contact Ken Grosse at (858) 534-4211 to discuss requests for alternative accessibility arrangements or accommodations.

Check-in begins at 10:30 a.m. For entry forms, payroll deduction forms to support scholarships, and more information about this one-of-a-kind event, please visit the Chancellor's Challenge web page at http://www.ucsd.edu/5k where you may also register and pay on line. Participants who have already registered can pick up their bib number and T-shirt at RIMAC on Thursday, October 17th from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. You may also call (858) 534-0263 for further information.

I look forward to a great event and lots of fun!
