SUBJECT:  Appointment of Assistant Vice Chancellor -
                     Auxiliary and Plant Services

I am pleased to announce that Gary Matthews will join UCSD as the Assistant Vice Chancellor - Auxiliary and Plant Services, effective February 19th, replacing Jack Hug who retired. Mr. Matthews comes to us from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Stony Brook, a Carnegie, Research I university.

In his capacity as Assistant Vice President for Administration at SUNY, Mr. Matthews had responsibility for a wide range of administrative and service departments. At UCSD, Mr. Matthews' responsibilities include physical plant, bookstores, energy management, Imprints, early childhood education, transportation and parking, Faculty Club, machine shops, and other areas. We are most fortunate to be gaining someone with his experience and leadership skills.
