SUBJECT: 2002 American Heart Walk The American Heart Association will hold its 11th annual San Diego American Heart Walk on Saturday, September 21, 2002, in Balboa Park. The 3.1 mile walk will begin at 8 a.m. The purpose of this event is to raise money for research and education for heart disease and stroke, the #1 and #3 killers of adults in the United States. In 2001, the American Heart Association returned $3.3 million to the San Diego community, $1.8 million of which was directed to UCSD, primarily for research activities. All faculty and staff are invited to participate in the American Heart Walk by joining Team UCSD. Prior to the start of the walk, a free continental breakfast will be provided compliments of Aramark. Following the walk, free sandwiches will be provided compliments of Subway and there will be informational booths and entertainment for your enjoyment. The American Heart Association anticipates between 7,000 - 8,000 total walkers for the event and we hope to have over 500 walkers on Team UCSD. All registered walkers for Team UCSD will receive a custom T-shirt that has been designed specifically for the occasion. In addition, various prizes are available for walkers who raise the most amount of money. All Team UCSD walkers will be automatically entered into a raffle for additional prizes. If you are interested in participating in this fun event, please contact Dennis Moran (543-2155), Karen Anspaugh (543-2155) or Christine Meyer (543-3605) for walker registration forms and additional information.
