SUBJECT:  Diversity Summit

I am pleased to announce a Diversity Summit sponsored by the Diversity Ad Hoc Planning Committee, which will be held on Friday, February 7, 2003 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Price Center Ballrooms. The UCSD community will have an opportunity to learn and ask questions about improving the climate for diversity at UCSD, and the University's role in "building community".

The special guest speakers, Dr. Walter Allen from UCLA, Dr. Grace Carroll of Howard University, Dr. Marguerite Bonous-Hammarth and Dr. Carol Peterson of UCLA, Dr. Jeffrey F. Millem of the University of Maryland - College Park, and Rowena Robles of UC Berkeley, will discuss topics featured in their book, Enacting Diverse Learning Environments.

This event will conclude an eight-month series of discussions about campus diversity and campus climate. The series has featured six roundtable sessions with more than 60 participants representing SIO, UCSD Medical Center, undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, staff, alumni, and members of the San Diego community with all participants giving personal feedback about building a diverse UCSD community.

In recognition of the significance of this event, I am approving two hours of administrative leave with pay that employees may apply to their attendance at the Summit. Therefore, supervisors are encouraged to allow employees two hours of administrative leave with pay to attend the Summit when the absence does not infringe upon the performance of required job duties.

I am taking this opportunity to express my appreciation to the Diversity Ad Hoc Planning Committee for their dedication and contributions to UCSD's diversity efforts. Members are: Phyllis Coleman, Emelyn De La Pena, Paula Doss, Paul Drake, Lourdes Felix, Jocille Flores, Ross Frank, Dennis Girardot, Ashanti Houston-Hands, Charlene Martinez, Irma Martinez Velasco, Sonny McCauley-Ellis, David Mitchell, Kyra Randall, Marcia Strong, Shaun Travers, Patrick Velasquez, Edwina Welch, Gabrielle Wienhausen, and Sonya Woods.

We look forward to seeing you at the Summit.
