PLANNING COMMITTEE October 14, 2003
ALL STUDENTS AT UCSD SUBJECT: Chancellor's Challenge 5K Run/Walk for Scholars President Robert C. Dynes will lead the eighth annual Chancellor's Challenge 5-K Run/Walk for Scholars on Friday, October 24, running a course through campus, including Library Walk, to raise scholarship support for our students. Since he first launched the event in 1996, the Chancellor's Challenge has raised $850,000 for nearly 430 undergraduate scholarships. We look forward to building on that success on Friday, October 24th. We invite all staff, faculty, students, alumni and friends in the community to join us for this exciting event. This year in tribute to President Dynes' passion for providing scholarships to students, we are doing something special. UCSD has created the Dynes and Hellman Endowed Undergraduate Scholarship Fund as a permanent acknowledgement of his leadership at UCSD and the support that he and Professor Frances Hellman have provided to our students. To make a contribution to this endowed fund, please call 858-822-5612. More about the Chancellor's Challenge ... Where and When? The Chancellor's Challenge starts and ends on the North Campus Field, adjacent to RIMAC. Check-in begins at 10:30 A.M. The Run/Walk starts at 12:15 P.M. Lunch will be provided after the race. What's the Challenge? The President will personally donate $25 to UCSD undergraduate scholarships for every person who beats him. Are there other group competitions? Associated Students vs. President Dynes Here are the stakes: If the AS President, Jeremy Gallagher, beats the President, Acting Chancellor, Marsha A. Chandler will donate funds towards the AS BBQ. If the President beats the AS President, the AS President will roll up his sleeves, get wet and soapy, and wash the President's car. Professor Frances Dynes Hellman Challenge Professor Frances Dynes Hellman will donate $25 to UCSD undergraduate scholarships for every woman who beats her! Michael Robertson Michael Robertson, of REEF and Lindows.com (formerly of MP3) and a 1990 UCSD alumnus from Warren College, will pay $25 toward undergraduate scholarships for every person who finishes ahead of him! You're Not a Runner? No Problem The Chancellor's Challenge is a "walk" as much as it is a "run." You do not need to be a runner or have athletic abilities to participate. You don't even need to cross the finish line. The point is to participate to the best of your abilities, have fun and help support UCSD's outstanding students. Individuals with disabilities should contact Dave Koch at 858-822-5260 to discuss requests for special accommodations.
