SUBJECT:  Changes in Campus Waste Management and Collection Schedule

In our continuing efforts to reduce waste and conserve resources, Physical Plant Services is implementing a campuswide, single-stream recycling program. Similar programs have been adopted by the Cities of Chula Vista, San Diego, and the San Diego Airport with great success. Single-stream recycling allows all recyclable materials to be collected together in conveniently located campus recycling containers.

During the next few weeks, blue desk-side recycling baskets (similar in size to your existing desk-side waste basket) will be placed in individual offices and cubicles. Guidelines specifically explaining what materials are recyclable and how to recycle them will accompany each container. Please read these guidelines carefully. All office recycling baskets will be emptied on Tuesdays and waste baskets will be emptied on Fridays. Larger waste and recycling bins in public areas will be emptied daily.

Your cooperation in recycling mixed paper, food and beverage containers will support UCSD's efforts to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills, conserve natural and financial resources in addition to supporting your custodial staff.

If you have any questions regarding single-stream recycling or your office requires a different collection schedule, or additional receptacles, please contact our Service Referral Desk at extension 42930.
