SUBJECT:  Endowed Chairs and Professorships, PPM 230-8

I am pleased to announce revisions to the following Policy and Procedure Manual section effective November 1, 2003:

PPM 230-8 - Endowed Chairs and Professorships

The revised policy encompasses changes suggested by the Academic Senate, the 2001 UCSD Task Force on Endowed Chairs, and other members of the campus community. The policy changes are intended to:

· Encourage the creation of endowed chairs that are broadly based.
· Define criteria for new endowed chair creation proposals.
· Streamline the campus process for the creation of endowed chairs.
· Provide definitions of the three types of endowed chairs at UCSD and
   expand eligibility to hold an endowed chair.
· Revise campus procedure for appointing a candidate to an endowed chair.
