SUBJECT:  Special Advisory Committee on War Related Matters

As the possibility of war intensifies and the concerns of our nation, state, and campus focus on the welfare of fellow human beings, we must unite in our efforts to uphold our mission as a university and strengthen our sense of community.

We should expect that members of our campus community will articulate strong and often conflicting views about an impending war. As in the past, we should encourage such freedom of expression while continuing to embrace our Principles of Community. These principles promote open expression within the bounds of courtesy, sensitivity, and respect.

We also need to keep our campus community informed from both global and local perspectives. This will require timely updates about current events and adequate resources and assistance to ensure everyone's safety and emotional well-being.

Therefore, I have formed a Special Advisory Committee on War Related Matters to advise me on implications that global conflict may have for the UCSD campus. Such matters include educational programs, communication strategies, management of campus events, security, privacy, health and well-being of our community, and the protection of free speech and academic freedom.

Members of the committee are:

Linda M. Williams, Assistant Chancellor (Co-Chair)
Darlene V. Willis, Executive Office for the Vice Chancellor Student
Affairs (Co-Chair)
TBD - Academic Senate (Co-Chair)
Nick Aguilar, Director, UCSD Student Policy & Judicial Affairs
Jen Brown, President, Associated Students
Kate Callen, Senior Writer, University Communications
Dolores Davies, University Communications Office
Tom Fleming, President, Graduate Students Association
Orville King, Police Chief
Jeffrey Philpott, Dean of Student Affairs, Warren College
Rick Vanderknyff, Web Manager, Blink
Carmen Vazquez, Assistant Vice Chancellor Student Life

I ask each of you to join me and our colleagues on this committee in ensuring the best possible working and learning environment for all members of our campus community during these difficult and challenging times.
