SUBJECT:  Proposed new Academic Personnel Policy on the Clinical
                     Professor series and the Voluntary Clinical Professor series

The University invites comments on drafts of Academic Personnel Manual (APM) Section 278, the Clinical Professor series; APM 210-6, Instructions to Review Committees which Advise on Actions Concerning the Clinical Professor series; APM 279, the Voluntary Clinical Professor series; and a revised APM 133-0 with summary chart plus appendix A on limitations on total periods of service.

The proposed Clinical Professor series is designed for salaried faculty who participate in patient care and teach in clinical programs. The proposed Voluntary Clinical Professor series utilizes the interest and skills of community practitioners on a part-time unsalaried basis in both patient care services and clinical teaching activities. Both these series exist currently on the campus, but there has never been a systemwide policy. In addition, the changes to APM 133-0 on limitations of service implement the proposed new policies.

The proposed Clinical Professor policy would apply to salaried Clinical Professor series appointees and individuals at zero percent time who hold a concomitant salaried clinician appointment at an affiliated hospital or as a staff physician or clinician at a University hospital. The Voluntary Clinical Professor policy would apply to those community practitioners who volunteer their time.
