ACADEMIC AFFAIRS May 23, 2003
SUBJECT: Proposed Revisions to Academic Personnel Policy 015 The University invites comments on proposed revisions to Academic Personnel Policy 015, The Faculty Code of Conduct, Part II - Professional Responsibilities, Ethical Principles, and Unacceptable Faculty Conduct - Section A. Teaching and Students. These revisions have been developed by the Academic Senate to modify the Faculty Code of Conduct with regard to faculty-student relationships. This proposal would prohibit a faculty member from entering into a romantic or sexual relationship with any student for whom a faculty member has, or should reasonably expect to have in the future, academic responsibility (instructional, evaluative, or supervisory). This proposal also would prohibit a faculty member from exercising academic responsibility (instructional, evaluative, or supervisory) for any student with whom a faculty member has a romantic or sexual relationship. The proposed policy would apply only to Senate and non-exclusively represented, non-Senate faculty who are covered by APM - 015. The proposed revised policy is available at the following website: http://www.ucop.edu/acadadv/acadpers/apm/review.html This is a formal review of the above policy. If you have comments or questions, please contact Kristi Petruzzelli at kpetruzzelli@ucsd.edu no later than June 6, 2003.
