SUBJECT:  Appointment of Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research

The Office of Graduate Studies and Research is pleased to announce the appointment of Marianne Generales to the position of Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research, effective August 1, 2003. Marianne will fill the position held by Jean Fort, who is retiring in January 2004.

Marianne has been with the University since 1994, first serving as Marine Program Specialist with the Sea Grant Program at SIO and then as Coordinator of Proposal Development for OGSR from 1995-2000. She has most recently served as Director of Research Program Development on the Associate Vice Chancellor for Research (AVCR) leadership team. Over the past several years, Marianne has assisted with the formulation of strategic plans for new multidisciplinary research and training initiatives, and has contributed to the development of campus research policies and procedures. She has broad familiarity with federal agencies and funding programs, contract and grant issues, and other critical research administration issues facing the campus.

Marianne comes to this position with a background in science and an understanding of research policy and program management and development. Her responsibilities will include leadership in research administration, postdoctoral education, and campus Organized and Multicampus Research Units. Marianne will serve as the campus staff resource in these areas, collaborating with and advising senior campus and UCOP administrators, departments, and research units. She will also oversee the planning of major new initiatives, and serve as a principal adviser to the Vice Chancellor for Research.
