SUBJECT:  New Job Description Tools

As a part of a campuswide initiative to redesign campus support processes that have potential for cost saving, the Human Resources Department is pleased to announce two new Web-based tools that greatly reduce the amount of time and effort necessary to create staff job descriptions.

PRE-APPROVED GENERIC JOB DESCRIPTION TEMPLATES -- By selecting one of the established job descriptions with standardized functions, tasks, and requirements, no classification review is required. See three examples of Generic Job Description Templates at:
http://joblink.ucsd.edu/mwb/Staging/loginToDesclib.html

JOB DESCRIPTION BUILDER -- With an inventory of 235 pre-defined functions containing 1,665 tasks and 2,390 skill requirements in standardized language, the Job Description Builder takes a lot of the composition work out of creating a new description for a position. Final Online Job Descriptions can be edited and customized as appropriate to accurately describe individual positions. See the Job Description Builder at: http://joblink.ucsd.edu/mwb/jdbuilder/index.html

This first-phase release of the Job Description Builder provides content for some of the most highly populated occupational groups including Clerical/Administrative, Student Affairs Officer, Staff Research Associate, Laboratory Support, Information Technology, and Administrative Analyst. We will continue to expand upon the Job Description Builder categories and content. Likewise, more Generic Job Description Templates will be added based on campus input.

We feel confident that these new tools will decrease your workload. However, it is important to note that job descriptions are used as the foundation for many critical human resources processes, such as hiring, training, and performance management. Therefore, the final job description must accurately describe the position.

Department human resources contacts were provided a demonstration of these new tools and are available to assist you as necessary. Employees with questions or comments may also contact Judy Johnson, Compensation Manager, at (858)534-0986 or jjohnson@ucsd.edu.
