SUBJECT:  Campus ID Card Transition

California legislation is currently pending that would prohibit state and local agencies from encoding or embedding a social security number in or on a card or document, including using a bar code, chip, magnetic strip, or other technology. We believe that this legislation will become law soon.

The Student and Staff ID Cards issued by the campus have used the Social Security Number embedded on the card's magnetic strip as the personal identifier.

An effort is underway to develop an alternative to the use of the social security number as the personal identifier for the campus ID card. An important step in the replacement of the social security number is to identify all departments that currently have a dependency on the social security number (on the ID card) as the personal identifier.

We will work with all identified departments in developing a plan to insure a smooth transition to the new card. Please take a few moments to answer the brief survey at: http://blink.ucsd.edu/go/ssnid

The information received from you will be vital to the progress of this important initiative. Thank you for your support. If you have specific questions please contact me at (858) 822-2338.
