SUBJECT:    Option to Remove Social Security Number from Campus ID Cards for Student and Employee ID Cards

California Legislation recently enacted, prohibits state and local agencies from encoding or embedding a Social Security number in or on a card or document, including using a bar code, chip, magnetic strip, or other technology. Effective January 1st of this year, the campus no longer uses the social security number as the personal identifier on the campus ID Card. All employee and student ID cards issued since January 1, 2004 use the student or employee ID as the personal identifier.

UCSD students and employees are not required to have their ID cards updated. However, cards may be updated with the ID number as the personal identifier if desired. Card update centers will be stationed at two locations during the week of April 5 - 9, 2004. After April 9th, cards can be updated at the Student Business Services Office. For more information and the schedules for card update locations go to http://blink.ucsd.edu/go/idcardupdate
