It is my pleasure to announce that Professor Steven Adler has been appointed as the next Provost of Earl Warren College.
Professor Adler, a member of the faculty in the Department of Theatre and Dance and Eleanor Roosevelt College, currently serves as Vice Chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance, Director of Theatre, and Head of the Master of Fine Arts Program in Stage Management. He has served on a wide array of campus-wide and departmental committees including the Advisory Committee on Undergraduate Education, the Senate Committee on Distinguished Teaching, and the Committee on Educational Policy.
Professor Adler began his academic career in 1987 as a Lecturer in the Department of Theatre and Dance at UCSD. He has been awarded a Japan Fellowship by the Asian Cultural Council and a UC Pacific Rim Fellowship for research into management process at Japanese theatre companies. He is the author of Rough Magic: Making Theatre at the Royal Shakespeare Company, and his new book, On Broadway: Art and Commerce on the Great White Way, will be published this fall.
Professor Adler is a highly regarded educator and stage manager. His experience in stage management includes numerous national tours and productions at leading Off-Broadway theatres, including Manhattan Theater Club, Classic Stage Company, and the original production of Forbidden Broadway. At La Jolla Playhouse, he has served as production stage manager for the musicals 80 Days and Elmer Gantry, as well as Macbeth, Dogeaters, Sweet Bird of Youth, Wintertime, and the original cast of the Tectonic Theater Project's groundbreaking production of The Laramie Project. He has stage managed the Broadway productions of Dance a Little Closer, Camelot, and the Tony Award-winning Big River.
Professor Adler's pedagogical and administrative experience, combined with his demonstrated commitment to undergraduate education, make him exceptionally well-suited to provide leadership to Earl Warren College. His appointment will become effective July 1, 2004.
