ALL STUDENTS AT UCSD

SUBJECT:    Transportation and Parking at UCSD

In the fall of 2004, parking on the UCSD campus will become more difficult due to population growth and construction projects, which will displace some existing surface parking lots. Transportation and Parking Services is working for you to lessen the impact of this expected parking shortage.

We strongly encourage you to consider letting us assist you in planning your commute. Our staff stands ready to help you examine alternative commuting options, including our free local bus and UCSD shuttle services, or to select the right parking permit for your individual needs. UCSD Rideshare Operations is committed to offering and promoting personalized transportation alternatives. For additional information on Rideshare options, please check our website at http://blink.ucsd.edu/Blink/External/Topics/Policy/0,1162,14983,00.html, or contact the Rideshare Office at (858) 534-7433. Together we can help create a transportation and parking model for the future of our community.

If, however, you choose to bring a car to campus, please note that the University of California does not use state funds for the construction, operation, maintenance, or administration of parking facilities. These costs must be borne by the users of the parking system. As the campus proceeds with an aggressive construction schedule to build additional, convenient, structure parking, permit rates are being adjusted to fund these new projects. The faculty, staff, and student rate increases adopted for 2004/2005 will continue this funding process.

Most parking lots are divided into red "A" (faculty/physicians), green "B" (staff and graduate students), and yellow "S" (undergraduate) sections. Below are the 2004/2005 student permit options and prices:

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS (yellow "S" spaces)

   Annual "S" permit (valid September 15, 2004 - June 30, 2005) $477.00

* Quarterly "S" permit (valid one academic quarter) $159.00
* Monthly "S" permit (valid 30 consecutive days) $53.00

GRADUATE STUDENTS (green "B" spaces)

   Annual "B" permit (valid September 15, 2004 - June 30, 2005) $639.00

* Quarterly "B" permit (valid one academic quarter) $213.00
* Monthly "B" permit (valid 30 consecutive days) $71.00

With a valid UCSD ID, graduate students can purchase undergraduate or graduate permits.

OTHER PERMIT OPTIONS FOR STUDENTS

   Night/Weekend Quarterly (within an academic quarter) $36.00

   Motorcycle (valid September 15, 2004 - June 30, 2005) $171.00

* Occasional Use "S" (valid for up to 10 days in 4-month period) $36.00
   Alternate Schedule "S" Quarterly Permit (M/W/F or Tu/Th/F) $98.00

* Permits marked with an asterisk may be pre-ordered (see below).

NOTE: The charges for an annual permit will be billed by the University Bursar's Office to your home address. If you will be parking on campus for at least two quarters, you may elect to divide the annual charge into quarterly installment payments. If you will only attend one quarter, a quarterly permit is recommended.

HOW TO PRE-ORDER A PARKING PERMIT

If you plan to park on campus beginning this September, we advise you to pre-order your parking permit. This can be done online via StudentLink at http://studentlink.ucsd.edu. You will need your student ID number (P.I.D.) and personal access code (P.A.C.) to log in.

If you are unable to access StudentLink or do not feel comfortable ordering your parking permit in this manner, you may pre-order your permit by telephone from Tuesday, August 10, 2004 through Friday, September 17, 2004 (from 8:30 A.M. to 5:30 P.M.), and on Saturday, September 18, 2004 (from 8:00 A.M. - 2:00 P.M.). Call (858) 534-4223, have your P.I.D. number ready, and be prepared to declare both the type of permit you want and your preferred payment plan.

Orders received by September 18, 2004, may be picked up at the Parking Office on or after September 21, 2004. A photo ID will be required for pickup. The Parking Office, located in the Gilman Parking Structure, is open from 7:00 A.M. - 5:30 P.M., Monday through Friday. For your convenience, the Parking Office will be open from 8:00 A.M. - 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, September 18, 2004.

If you will be attending Summer Quarter and require an annual parking permit, please purchase your permit via StudentLink or at the Parking Office by July 1, 2004.

PARKING PERMIT CANCELLATION

An annual parking permit is valid through June 30, 2005 or until you return your permit with a signed cancellation form to the Parking Office. If you graduate, take a leave of absence, or withdraw from school for any reason and forget to cancel your permit, it will remain valid, and you will be financially responsible for all parking fees accrued. Please return your permit to the Parking Office if you no longer need to park on campus.

Thank you for your attention to this notice. We look forward to assisting you with your transportation and parking needs throughout the year.

Sincerely,

Gregory M. Snee
