SUBJECT:    Appointment of Dr. William Howe, Director, SLES

Please join me in welcoming Dr. William Howe as Director of the newly created Center for Student Leadership, Engagement and Service (SLES), effective September 13, 2004. The SLES Center offers students the opportunity to customize their co-curricular student learning experiences through individual development and community outreach.

Dr. Howe has 21 years experience in providing leadership and administrative direction in higher education and leadership development. He earned his Ph.D. in Education from Stanford and an Ed.M. in Education from Harvard. Dr. Howe developed the Problem-Based Learning Program for school leaders at Stanford and the Navy and Pacific Islander Leadership Doctoral Programs at the University of San Diego. He also served as one of the founding faculty at Jepson School of Leadership Studies and directed the Jepson School’s initial Service Learning Program.

We are pleased to have Dr. Howe join the Student Affairs Student Life team and I hope you will join me in welcoming him to his new position.
