SUBJECT:    Search for the Dean of Graduate Studies

As announced earlier this month, we are moving forward to separate the positions of Vice Chancellor-Research and Dean of Graduate Studies, and a nationwide search for the Vice Chancellor-Research was initiated recently.

I am writing now to invite nominations and applications for the position of Dean of Graduate Studies and to announce the membership of the Search Committee (listed below). As a key member of the University's leadership, the Dean reports directly to the Senior Vice Chancellor-Academic Affairs and represents the university at the campus, local, state, and national levels. The job description for the dean's position follows this announcement and is also posted on the Academic Affairs web site:

http://academicaffairs.ucsd.edu/offices/adeo/recruitment/other.htm The search for the Dean of Graduate Studies will be confined to the UCSD campus, and candidates must hold full-time, tenured faculty appointments. The Dean will be appointed to serve at 100% time for a five-year term, renewable following appropriate review.

The Search Committee will begin reviewing candidates in January, 2006, and will continue until the position is filled. Nominations and applications received by JANUARY 20, 2006 will receive full consideration. Application materials (statement of interest, resume, email address, and names of references) should be submitted electronically (Microsoft Word documents preferred), in confidence, to:

DEAN OF GRADUATE STUDIES

POSITION DESCRIPTION - RESPONSIBILITIES:

GRADUATE STUDIES ADMINISTRATION

Oversees graduate admissions, academic progress, financial support, student affairs, diversity, graduate student academic employee collective bargaining, and the granting of higher degrees; serves as the deputy of the Graduate Council of the Academic Senate in administering policies, procedures, requirements, and standards for graduate study; responsible for the Center for Teaching Development; coordinates the reviews of individual graduate programs; represents UCSD at the University of California (UC) Council of Graduate Deans, the AAU Association of Graduate Schools, the Council of Graduate schools, and other UC and national forums.

GENERAL ADMINISTRATION

Reviews and makes recommendations on Academic Senate faculty career reviews for the General Campus, and all academic reviews for the Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies and the Rady School of Management. Serves on the General Campus Program Review Committee and as chair of the TA Allocation Subcommittee; advises the Senior Vice Chancellor Academic Affairs on General Campus budget priorities and resource allocations for graduate education; advises and makes recommendations to the Senior Vice Chancellor, Campus Counsel, and senior administrative staff on the review and resolution of academic employee relations issues; serves on the Chancellor's Council.
