ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

ALL ACADEMIC AND INSTRUCTIONAL STAFF
KEY ADMINISTRATORS/KEY SUPPORT STAFF

SUBJECT:   Search for the Vice Chancellor-Research

After consultation with the Academic Senate, we are moving forward to separate the positions of Vice Chancellor-Research and Dean of Graduate Studies. This restructuring will be implemented at the end of this academic year, when VC/Dean Richard Attiyeh plans to retire. A nationwide search for the Vice Chancellor-Research will commence immediately, and an internal campus search for the Dean of Graduate Studies will be initiated shortly thereafter. I am writing now to announce the membership of the Search Committee (listed below) and to invite nominations and applications for the position of Vice Chancellor for Research.

With overall managerial responsibility for UCSD's research enterprise, the Vice Chancellor for Research promotes, supports and facilitates UCSD's research mission and the infrastructure required of a top research institution. As a key member of the University's leadership, the Vice Chancellor reports directly to the Senior Vice Chancellor-Academic Affairs and represents the university at the campus, local, state, national, and international levels. Successful candidates should have some prior experience in academic administration and must have a distinguished record of scholarship, teaching, and service appropriate for appointment as a tenured senior professor in one of UCSD's academic departments.

The Vice Chancellor for Research will be appointed to serve at 100% time for a five-year term, renewable following appropriate review. The job description and required qualifications for the Vice Chancellor's position follow this announcement, and are also posted on the Academic Affairs web site:

The Search Committee, chaired by AVC David Miller, will begin reviewing candidates in January, 2006, and will continue until the position is filled. A search firm, Russell Reynolds Associates, will assist with this recruitment, and all candidate materials will be sent directly to them. Nominations and applications received by JANUARY 20, 2006 will receive full consideration. Nomination materials and applications (resume, statement of interest, email address, and names of references) should be submitted electronically (Microsoft Word files preferred), in confidence, to Search Committee Chair David Miller, c/o:
