November 9, 2005
You will have the opportunity to enroll in UC's Supplemental Disability Insurance Plan during open enrollment in November. This is an essential benefit for faculty who do not accrue sick leave. This plan has not been open for enrollment in nearly 15 years, and is unlikely to be open again. Faculty who do not enroll during their initial Period of Eligibility may normally do so later only by submitting a statement of health, which is subject to carrier approval. However, this November, you will have a unique chance to enroll for the first time or shorten your waiting period without submitting a statement of health. On November 14, 2005, a representative from Liberty Mutual (insurance carrier) will be available to answer questions at the Medical Center from 11:00 am. to 2:00 p.m. in the Hillcrest Cafeteria Small Dining Rooms and Patio. On November 15, 2005, representatives from Liberty Mutual will be on the general campus at the Price Center during the Benefits Fair to give two presentations; these are scheduled for 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. in Ballroom B. We strongly encourage you to attend one of these presentations to better understand the value of obtaining Supplemental Disability Insurance, particularly faculty members who do not accrue sick leave. Keep in mind that while UC provides short-term disability insurance, the coverage is minimal (a maximum of $800 per month for a maximum of six months) and is unlikely to meet your needs if you are seriously ill or injured for an extended period of time. You can find information about the Supplemental Disability Insurance Plan on the "At Your Service" website http://atyourservice.ucop.edu/ including the online Open Enrollment application (available now).
