SUBJECT:	CONSTRUCTION ALERT - North Campus Utility Lines
	Undergrounding Project

Project Description/Location

Installation of a construction barrier and fence and then street excavation and underground utility pipe placement in the street and sidewalk along the east side of Hopkins Drive just south of RIMAC field extending south on Hopkins Drive to within approximately 50 feet of the intersection of Hopkins Drive and Voigt Drive. The second phase will include completion of the trenching and installation of an underground utility vault in the Hopkins Drive/Voigt Drive intersection. The installation of the underground utilities is to provide utility services to projects currently under construction as well as future projects planned for North Campus.

Immediate Street Impacts

Beginning the week of December 5, 2005 and continuing until approximately June 2006, the east side of Hopkins Drive will be temporarily fenced off, shifting traffic lanes to the west and reducing each traffic lane width to 12 feet. Two 12 foot lanes of traffic will be maintained, one in each direction (north bound and south bound). The bicycle lane and the sidewalk along the east side will be impacted due to the construction. As this project is adjacent to the construction site for the Hopkins Parking Structure and the sidewalk adjacent to that project on the west side of Hopkins Drive is also closed to pedestrians and bicycles, it is recommended that pedestrians heading north and south along Hopkins Drive from the Voigt Drive intersection use Ridgewalk to the west of RIMAC and the SuperComputer Center. Both projects will also affect the bicycle lane in each direction requiring bicycles and vehicles to share the two lanes of traffic. An alternate route for bicycles is to use Ridgewalk. Caution should be exercised.

Additional trenching and underground utility construction work is expected to occur late December 2005 and early 2006 at the intersection of Voigt Drive and Hopkins Drive. Traffic control measures will be implemented in Hopkins Drive and at the intersection of Voigt Drive to minimize the impact to traffic flow. There may be times that one lane of traffic is available. Intermittent and periodic traffic delays of up to three minutes could be expected. Flagmen will be utilized to control traffic flow as needed during these periods.

It is recommended that alternate routes be utilized during this period of time in order to avoid any traffic delays. Additional construction activity may occur periodically within these areas. We greatly appreciate your patience during these construction activities.
