HEALTH SCIENCES DEAN, SCHOOL OF MEDICINE March 30, 2005
ALL AT UCSD
Next week, we will celebrate a milestone for UCSD and the Health Sciences-the opening of the spectacular Rebecca and John Moores UCSD Cancer Center on UCSD's East Campus. This 270,000 square foot facility will unite the Center's clinical, research, education and outreach programs in one state-of-the-art building, designed both for the comfort of patients, and to foster and support 21st century diagnostics, medical care and research. The region's only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Moores UCSD Cancer Center serves patients from throughout San Diego and beyond, providing access to the most advanced treatments and technologies, and to the Center's highly skilled and dedicated physicians and staff. I couldn't be more delighted that we will now be able to care for our patients in a setting that truly reflects the excellence of our world-class providers and programs. I would like to invite the campus community to attend the dedication ceremonies, which will begin 10 a.m. Friday, April 8, at the Cancer Center. UCSD Chancellor Marye Anne Fox, NCI Director Andrew von Eschenbach, and UC Regent John Moores will be among the featured speakers. Following the ceremony, all are welcome to attend a reception and take a tour of the building. Tours will be offered through 1 p.m. for anyone who would like to view the facility. In addition to celebrating our new Cancer Center, this will be an opportunity to recognize the generous philanthropy of John and Rebecca Moores; Jerome and Miriam Katzin, after whom the Cancer Center's Katzin Research Laboratories are named, and many others who contributed generously to this project; and to congratulate our colleagues and friends who have worked so hard to make this project a reality. If you are able to attend, please RSVP to the UCSD Office of Special Events and Protocol at sep@ucsd.edu by April 1. This will be a memorable day for UCSD, and for patients and the extended community who will all benefit from this extraordinary resource.
