Interim Appointments in External Relations

As I shared with our campus community several weeks ago, Vice Chancellor for External Relations Jim Langley will leave UCSD in June to begin his new position with Georgetown University. You may also know that Associate Vice Chancellor for Development, Sarah West, had announced late last year that she would return to the East Coast. Her last day will be June 8.

Soon I will establish a search committee to conduct a national search for a Vice Chancellor for External Relations. In the meantime, I have asked Vice Chancellor John Woods to take on the additional responsibility of overseeing External Relations, in addition to his current area of Resources Management and Planning. John has graciously agreed and I am grateful for his willingness to serve in this capacity.

In addition, I am pleased that Rebecca Newman will serve as Interim Associate Vice Chancellor for Development. Rebecca is currently Associate Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences Development and she will continue to oversee that area as well.

The interim positions will be effective on June 1, 2005. We are fortunate to have committed and talented leaders to take on these roles. Please join me in thanking both John and Rebecca, and I know they will appreciate your support during this time of transition.
