SUBJECT:    Retirement of Mary Dhooge, Dean of International Education
and Director of the International Center

After 33 years of service to UCSD, Mary Dhooge will retire from her position as Dean of International Education and Director of the International Center, effective January 2007.

In her first position at UCSD, Mary served as Assistant Dean of Revelle College for seven years, during which time she founded the UCSD Women’s Center and created two well-established UCSD traditions: the annual campuswide College Bowl and the annual “Un-Olympics.”

During her 26 years as Dean of International Education and Director of the International Center, Mary led the growth of UCSD student participation in study abroad programs from 60 students to over 1200 students per year, while UCSD’s international student and scholar population increased from 600 to 4000. Among major research universities, UCSD is ranked number one in the nation based on students studying abroad for a full academic year and ranks fourth nationally in the number of scholars hosted. The International Center is widely regarded as a “best practice” model in the UC system and has an outstanding national reputation.

A national search to replace Mary is well underway, with the goal of having a new Dean/Director on board early in Winter Quarter.

Please join me in thanking Mary for her many contributions to the development of international education and to the campus as a whole during her 33-year career of distinguished service to UCSD. We sincerely wish her a wonderful retirement.
