Dear Colleagues and Friends: We at the Stuart Collection are deeply saddened by the death of Nam June Paik - artist, composer and friend. Paik is known world-wide as the "grandfather of video art". He selected the UCSD Media Center as the site for his multi-element work, Something Pacific in 1986 creating a TV "landscape" outdoors and a live TV panel in the Media Center lobby. It was his first permanent outdoor sculpture and is an important part of the collection. The original video tapes Nam June created for the indoor element of Something Pacific will be playing through February 12. For preservation reasons they are only played on very special occasions. Those sets are usually cabled from live MTV. A link to the New York Times obituary follows: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/01/31/arts/design/31paik.htm Stuart Collection brochures with maps for a self-guided tour are available at the Geisel Library Information Desk, EDNA and the Faculty Club.
