ALL ACADEMICS AT UCSD

SUBJECT:    February 22, 2006 Faculty Lunch

The UCSD Libraries, Academic Senate Committee on Academic Personnel, and Academic Senate Committee on Library are pleased to invite all UCSD faculty to the third in our lunch-time series:

Publish and/or Perish: Changes in Scholarly Communication

A few spaces remain in our third lunch which will focus on how electronic communication is changing the way your scholarship and research is disseminated and read. We have two outstanding speakers:

Stephen Rhind-Tutt, President of Alexander Street Press, an electronic publishing company in the Humanities and Social Sciences will address:

"Libraries, Publishers, Authors - what's next?"

Lynn Withey, Director of the University of California Press and current President of the American Association of University Presses will speak on

"Digital Publishing in the Humanities and Social Sciences:
Barriers and Opportunities"

Wednesday, February 22, 2006
12:00 - 1:30p.m.
UCSD Faculty Club Lounge

Both of our February speakers bring an in-depth knowledge of electronic publishing.

Stephen Rhind-Tutt has 17 years of electronic publishing experience. In addition to his work at Alexander Street Press, he was formerly Vice President Health Sciences Publishing, and Vice President U.S. Region for SilverPlatter Information. Until its sale to Bell & Howell Corporation Stephen was President of Chadwyck-Healey, Inc. where he developed and distributed more than 150 electronic products, including the world's largest collection of primary texts in English and American Literature.

Lynne Withey joined UC Press in 1986 and became Director in 2003. During her tenure, the Press has greatly expanded its investment in digital publishing. Lynne holds a Ph.D. in history from UC Berkeley and has taught at Berkeley, the University of Iowa, and Boston University. She is the author of four books. Her first book, a biography of Abigail Adams, was reissued in 2001.

Please join us on February 22. There is no cost for the lunch and seminar but an RSVP is requested to Jennifer Tom (jtom@ucsd.edu) by February 16, 2006. We look forward to seeing you!
