GENERAL CAMPUS AND SIO FACULTY
SCHOOL OF MEDICINE FACULTY WITH TEACHING TITLES

SUBJECT:    Senior Seminar Program

It is my pleasure to announce the new Senior Seminar Program, beginning in the 2006-2007 academic year. This new initiative in undergraduate education will provide upper-division students with an additional opportunity to meet with faculty in a small class environment to explore advanced topics of mutual interest.

Senior Seminars will carry one unit credit, will be graded P/NP, meet for 8 -10 hours during a quarter, and will be limited to 20 students. Senior Seminars will be offered under a new course number: XXX 192 (e.g. HITO 192 or MATH 192).

Regular rank General Campus and SIO faculty, Lecturers/Senior Lecturers w/Security of Employment, Lecturers/Senior Lecturers with Potential Security of Employment, Professors Emeritus, and School of Medicine faculty with instructional titles are eligible to teach senior seminars. Senior Seminars will be taught off-load and eligible faculty will receive a $1,500 research stipend. Beginning in the 2007- 08 academic year, research stipends will be available only to faculty in academic units that have taught their minimum number of Freshman Seminars during the previous year.

Please refer to the Senior Seminar website for additional information pertaining to teaching eligibility, criteria for receiving research stipends, and quarterly proposal due dates:

The Fall 2006 Class Schedule will be posted on TritonLink on April 28, and Senior registration begins on May 3. Proposals to teach a Senior Seminar during Fall 2006 must be received by April 20, 2006 in order to meet this timeline.

It is my hope that you will join your colleagues in teaching Senior Seminars on a regular basis to make it as successful as the Freshman Seminar Program. Please contact Mark Appelbaum (2-4358) or April Burcham (2-5855) with comments or questions.
