SUBJECT:    Farewell reception for Richard Attiyeh, Vice Chancellor of
Research and Dean, Graduate Studies

We invite the campus community to join us in honoring Vice Chancellor Richard Attiyeh at a farewell reception to be held from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Thursday, June 15, in the Faculty Club.

As many of you know, Dick announced his retirement last year but graciously agreed to remain in his post until the search for a successor was under way. Now, after 39 years of service to UCSD in many capacities, he will officially retire at the end of the academic quarter, effective June 30, 2006.

His many years of dedication to UCSD began in 1967 when he joined the Department of Economics as a faculty member, and later served as chair of the department from 1972 to 1976. A strong advocate for graduate education and research, Dick was named Dean of Graduate Studies and Research in 1982, and then took on an expanded role as Vice Chancellor for Research in 1994. In addition, he served one year, 1996-67, as interim Senior Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs.

Dick received his Ph.D. in economics from Yale University, and served as an assistant professor at both Stanford and Yale before joining the UCSD faculty.

A scholar of the highest integrity, he has served as mentor and senior advisor, many times over, to UC and UCSD leaders, faculty, staff and students and to academic officials across the country. His public service has included a term as president of the Association of Graduate Schools of the Association of American Universities, Executive Committee; chair of the Association of Graduate Schools Project for Research on Doctoral Education Steering Committee; chair of the California Biomedical Research Association Board of directors, and treasurer, California Society for Biomedical Research.

He has written numerous books, journal articles and textbooks on the economics of education, macroeconomics, and economics in general.

Dick’s impact on UCSD has been immeasurable; he helped make this institution extraordinary by bringing excellence to our graduate studies and research enterprises, which are at the very heart of the university.

Because a large turnout of Dick’s colleagues and friends are expected at the reception, we ask you to rsvp online at http://www-er.ucsd.edu/Attiyeh/
