SUBJECT:    September 11 Fifth Anniversary Commemoration

September 11, 2006 will hold special significance for our country as we commemorate the fifth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack. In honor of this solemn day in our nation’s history, UC San Diego will mark the fifth anniversary with a brief ceremony at noon at the west end of Warren Mall, near the foot of the Snake Path. The site is marked by a memorial tree planted during a ceremony held after September 11, 2001.

The simple ceremony on Monday, September 11, 2006 will include the presentation of colors by the UCSD Veteran’s Association, singing of God Bless America and the national anthem, brief remarks, and the placing of a commemorative wreath at the base of the memorial tree. Ringing of the carillon throughout the campus at 12:15 p.m. will initiate a moment of silence.

Red, white and blue commemorative ribbons will be given to attendees.

I am approving one hour of administrative leave with pay, and I encourage supervisors to allow employees to attend the commemorative ceremony as long as the absence does not infringe upon the performance of required job duties. Thank you for your service to this University and continuing to exemplify the values that make ours a strong community.
