SUBJECT:    Director of the Institute on Global Conflict and
Cooperation (IGCC)

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Susan Shirk as the Director of the Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation (IGCC). Professor Shirk is Professor of Political Science at the Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies (IR/PS) at UCSD.

Professor Shirk, a former director of IGCC from 1991-1997, accepted an assignment at the U.S. Department of State in 1997, and served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong in the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs from 1997-2000. Professor Shirk became an IGCC Research Director upon her return to UCSD in 2000.

Professor Shirk is an Asia specialist, with an emphasis on Chinese politics and economics, U.S.- China relations, Northeast Asia including North Korea, and U.S. policies toward Asia.
