SUBJECT:	Interim Appointment as Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences and
	Interim Dean of the School of Medicine

I am pleased to announce that David N. Bailey, M.D., will serve as Interim Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences and Interim Dean of the School of Medicine beginning October 1, when Vice Chancellor and Dean Edward W. Holmes departs UC San Diego for his new position with the Agency for Science, Technology and Research in Singapore, and the National University of Singapore. A national search is under way for a permanent vice chancellor and dean.

Dr. Bailey served as Interim Vice Chancellor prior to Dr. Holmes’ recruitment in 2000. He is currently Deputy Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences and School of Medicine Dean for Faculty and Student Matters.

Dr. Bailey is a highly respected administrator, clinician and researcher, having joined the UC San Diego faculty 1977. He previously served as Professor and Chair of the medical school’s Department of Pathology.

With Dr. Bailey’s leadership and the support of a strong administrative team, the Health Sciences will continue its impressive performance as a leading center for medical and pharmacy education, life sciences research and high quality patient care. I am grateful that David will continue his exemplary service to UC San Diego by assisting during this time of transition.
