SUBJECT:    Reception to Honor Vice Chancellor Charles Kennel

Please join me for a reception on September 29 to honor Vice Chancellor Charlie Kennel. He served as Vice Chancellor for Marine Sciences, Director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO), and Dean of the Graduate School for Marine Sciences for more than eight years. We’ll honor Charlie's contributions as he prepares for his next chapter at UC San Diego, heading our new Environment and Sustainability Initiative. Charlie’s reception will take place from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. at the Pawka Green at Scripps.

Charlie has had a huge impact on the growth and recognition of Scripps. Under his leadership, Scripps established new degree programs and centers and expanded undergraduate and graduate teaching. Charlie guided Scripps to its highest graduate student enrollment in its history. He also effectively positioned Scripps to take the lead in multidisciplinary programs at UC San Diego and launched international collaborations.

Among his many honors, Charlie was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society. He was appointed by Governor Gray Davis to the California Climate Action Registry Board of Directors. He’s been a Harvard National Scholar, a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and was elected to the National Academy of Sciences.

We’re fortunate Charlie is staying at UC San Diego to lead our Environment and Sustainability Initiative. His expertise and dedication to this initiative will ensure the development of a comprehensive and collaborative program. In addition to taking on a new role, Charlie will be a professor of climate and environmental sciences at Scripps.

We are expecting a large turnout of Charlie’s admirers, colleagues and friends at the reception. So if you plan to attend, please RSVP online at http://www-er.ucsd.edu/event/kennel. If you have any questions, you may call (858) 534-6386.
