SUBJECT:    UCSD Black History Month February 2007

I am pleased to announce that UCSD will celebrate Black History Month during February 2007 with a series of programs and activities focusing on the achievements of African Americans. Activities include discussions, poetry, speakers, and food. Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to participate in this important observance. UC San Diego’s theme for this year’s celebration is “From Slavery to Freedom: UCSD Celebrates the Journeys and Stories of African Americans.”

To learn more about the month-long activities, please visit:
http://blackhistorymonth.ucsd.edu/.

A sampling of this year's activities includes:

*Black History Month Kick-Off Celebration from noon to 2:00 p.m. at the Price Center Plaza on February 1.

*Journey to Empowerment: Presentation by Retired Admiral Evelyn J. Fields from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Price Center Ballroom on February 16.

* 5th Annual UCSD Black History Month Celebration and Scholarship Brunch with guest speaker, actor James Avery, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Faculty Club on February 24. For ticket information, please contact the UCSD Box Office: (858) 534-TIXS.

In recognition of this annual event, I am approving two hours of administrative leave with pay for employees to attend a UCSD Black History Month activity. Supervisors, upon request, may approve the use of such leave as long as the absence does not infringe upon the performance of required job duties.

On behalf of the campus community, I would like to express our sincere appreciation to the members of the UCSD Black History Month Planning Committee for their work on this celebration.

Please join me, the members of the UCSD Black History Month Planning Committee, and our colleagues and guests as we celebrate Black History Month at UCSD.
