SUBJECT:    U.S. Open Golf Tournament 2008

The U.S. Open Golf Tournament will be held during the week of June 9-15, 2008 at the Torrey Pines Golf Course and is expected to significantly impact transportation and roads surrounding our campus. Although eight months away, I want to alert faculty, staff, students, and neighbors so you may begin to plan around this event.

Preliminary working numbers for tournament-related population in the area of the golf course are approximately 50,000 people per day, including spectators and volunteers. Peak hours for arriving traffic are 7:30-11 a.m.; peak exiting hours are 3:30-6:30 p.m. The San Diego County Fair has postponed its opening day from June 13 to June 14; nevertheless, roads in the area are expected to be tremendously affected.

As previously announced, Commencements in 2008 will be held June 21, 22 and 23, one week later than usual to minimize traffic and accommodation concerns. Parents and senior students are being kept apprised of the change through ongoing communications with the Student Affairs. A number of activities are planned for the senior students during the week after final exams and before the Commencement weekend.

More information about the U.S.Open as it relates to UC San Diego operations will be available shortly, including a UC San Diego website for all pertinent information and Human Resources-related announcements.

I appreciate the assistance of all faculty and staff in helping the campus to run smoothly during the week of the Open and in supporting our commitment to serve as a good neighbor to the San Diego community.
