SUBJECT:    Controlled Substances for Research, Teaching and Veterinary
Care, PPM 516-7

Attached is a new policy on Controlled Substances for Research, Teaching and Veterinary Care, PPM 516-7, which sets forth policy and responsibilities applicable to the authorization, procurement, receipt, security, storage, control, biennial inventory, and disposal of Controlled Substances, List I and Precursor Chemicals for research, teaching and veterinary care. This policy does not apply to controlled substances dispensed by a practitioner to a patient.

The Controlled Substances Program Manager maintains delegated authority and responsibility for overall coordination of this policy and specific responsibility for the approval, receipt, and delivery of controlled substances to authorized personnel. There are substantial penalties for violation(s) of this policy. All individuals who purchase, handle, store, dispose, and/or utilize controlled substances should become familiar with this policy.
