ALL ACADEMICS AND STAFF AT UCSD (including UCSD Medical Center) ALL STUDENTS AT UCSD
Next week – April 16-20 – we will join our fellow global citizens by celebrating Earth Week. At UC San Diego, this is an opportunity for us to both celebrate our achievements in sustainability and to show our commitment and drive to do all we can in the future to live and work in an environmentally sensitive manner. UC San Diego has a long history of innovative, environmentally oriented research, dating back to the groundbreaking work on climate change by Roger Revelle and David Keeling some 40 years ago. We are also equally committed to implementing green practices in all campus operations, and are acknowledging these accomplishments during Earth Week. The weeklong series, planned by our dedicated students and staff, includes some 30 events, ranging from a clean car show and student sustainability research and video competitions to nightly organic dinners and an Eco Job Fair. Activities will begin at noon on April 16 in the Price Center where I will be honored to present our first-ever UC San Diego Sustainability Awards. Recycled glass trophies will be awarded to 10 individuals and groups who are helping to improve environmental awareness on our campus. Examples of their contributions include educating people on how to conserve energy, increasing the campus use of alternate transportation, and incorporating the use of biodiesel in our campus shuttle buses. I encourage you to join me in showing how easy it is being green by wearing green on Monday, our first day of Earth Week, and at our noon kick-off event. As your schedule permits, I encourage you to participate in Earth Week events and would encourage you to view a complete schedule of the week’s activities by visiting http://earthweek.ucsd.edu.
