SUBJECT:    Associate Vice Chancellor for Undergraduate Education

I am delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Barbara Sawrey as Associate Vice Chancellor for Undergraduate Education (AVC-UE), effective July 1, 2007. Dr. Sawrey has been a member of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry since 1984. She holds an appointment as a Senior Lecturer with Security of Employment and has served as the Department's Vice Chair for Education since 1994. Her research in Chemical Education focuses on understanding the development of student learning of complex scientific processes and concepts. Dr. Sawrey is a member of several professional organizations including the American Chemical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

As the AVC-UE, Dr. Sawrey will serve as a senior advisor to the Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs on undergraduate education matters. The AVC-UE works together with the undergraduate colleges and academic departments and programs for the implementation of initiatives and programs to improve and expand undergraduate education at UCSD. The position provides leadership and promotes excellence and innovation in undergraduate education across colleges, divisions, schools and disciplines; participates in consideration of enrollment management issues in collaboration with the Academic Senate and Student Affairs; serves as an advisor to Course and Professor Evaluation (CAPE) leadership and as a liaison between CAPE, academic departments, faculty members, the Academic Senate, and others in the evaluation of undergraduate instruction; reviews and/or approves academic appointments associated with the College Writing Programs and College Core Courses; participates in the coordination of expanded undergraduate instruction in state-funded Summer Session; provides oversight to the UCSD faculty directors of the Educational Abroad Program (EAP), the UCDC program, and the UC Center Sacramento; and serves as the campus Accreditation Liaison Officer (ALO) with the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and leads the campus through reaffirmation of accreditation reviews.

Dr. Sawrey has an exceptional record of service to the UCSD campus and the University of California System, with many of her service activities related to undergraduate education. She has served as Chair of UCSD's Admissions Committee and the UC Board of Admissions and Relations with Schools; Acting Provost of Revelle College; and, in her role as Vice Chair for Education in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry she serves as a member of the Council on Undergraduate Education, which serves as a forum for sharing best practices and discussing new initiatives and proposed policy changes to enhance the undergraduate academic experience at UCSD. Please join me in welcoming Dr. Barbara Sawrey to this important position and in thanking incumbent Mark Appelbaum for his extraordinary tenure of service as the campus' first Associate Vice Chancellor for Undergraduate Education.
