SUBJECT:    Retirement reception for Vice Chancellor Joseph Watson

Please join me on Monday, June 4, at a retirement reception honoring Joseph Watson, Vice Chancellor - Student Affairs, for his more than 40 years of exemplary service to UC San Diego. The reception will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. in the multipurpose room of the new Student Services Center, Rupertus Way and Myers Drive.

In his 40 years at UC San Diego, Dr. Watson has played an integral role in the overall management and metamorphosis of our campus. From his earliest days, he has been one of the most creative proponents of developing ways to attract the best and brightest students of all races and backgrounds, without ever compromising admission standards. He has developed and implemented the Faculty Mentor program and has worked with Career Services to ensure that our programs meet the needs of all students and encourage them to apply to graduate and professional schools.

Dr. Watson's 11-year service as Provost of Third College, now Thurgood Marshall College, is indicative of his exemplary leadership and extraordinary commitment to students. Among other accomplishments: establishing TritonLink as the portal for student services; developing the Student and Price Centers, RIMAC, Career Services and many other student facilities; moving from Division III to Division II in athletics; working with the International Center to introduce the Opportunity Abroad Program; serving on the California Student Aid Commission as the UC representative for 14 years; and developing the UC Education Finance Model which allows students from low- and middle-income families to access an affordable education within UC.

The reception is an opportunity to thank Dr. Watson for his service to UC San Diego and wish him well in his retirement. If you have any questions about the reception, please call 858-534-6386.
