SUBJECT:    Associate Vice Chancellor - Research

I am pleased to announce that George Tynan has been appointed to the position of Associate Vice Chancellor - Research, effective July 1, 2007. Dr. Tynan will oversee research matters pertaining to Organized Research Units (ORUs), Postdoctoral Scholar and Academic Research Personnel, Core Research Facilities, and Multi-investigator and limited submission opportunities.

Dr. Tynan has been a member of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering since 1999. He earned his Ph.D in Engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1991. Dr. Tynan is an expert in plasma physics and fusion and played a leading role in the development of the Fusion Plasma Physics graduate program in the Jacobs School of Engineering. He is a principal investigator for a university research group focused on edge physics and plasma-material interactions for magnetic fusion. Most recently, Dr. Tynan was an Associate Director for the Center for Energy Research, one of our campus ORUs.

I want to take this opportunity to express our sincere appreciation to David Sworder, who is stepping down as Associate Vice Chancellor - Research. Dr. Sworder has served the campus admirably in this role and as Associate Dean of Graduate Studies since 1991.

I hope you will join me in congratulating George Tynan on his new position.
