SUBJECT:    Appointment of Dr. Penny Rue as Vice Chancellor -
Student Affairs

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Penny Rue as the new Vice Chancellor - Student Affairs. We have received approval from the University of California Board of Regents for Dr. Rue to begin her appointment at UC San Diego on September 10, 2007.

At UC San Diego, Dr. Rue's responsibilities will include the development, assessment and improvement of services that meet and support the needs of students and the University's mission. As Vice Chancellor - Student Affairs, she will oversee a wide range of student services, including academic integrity initiatives, admissions and enrollment services, career services, intercollegiate athletics and campus recreation programs, the International Center and Study Abroad programs, student educational advancement, student health and wellness, student judicial affairs, University events, and fund-raising for student scholarships. In addition, Dr. Rue's responsibilities encompass student life, including coordinating implementation of appropriate recommendations of the Undergraduate Student Experience and Satisfaction Report and the Graduate and Professional Student Experience Survey, as well as student government and various student activities. She will work closely with the Provosts and the Deans of Student Affairs in the six colleges.

Currently the Dean of Students at the University of Virginia, Dr. Rue brings an exceptional background working with students in building a campus culture that is open, communicative, productive, and is an overall dynamic learning environment. She received her A.B. from Duke University in English and Religion, an M.A. in Student Personnel Work from The Ohio State University, and her Ph.D. from the University of Maryland in Counseling and Personnel Services. Dr. Rue has lectured at the University of Virginia and has spent over 30 years in some of the most prestigious higher education institutions in the U.S., including Georgetown University, University of Maryland, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

In addition to being a published author, she has served on many professional associations, including The American College Personnel Association; The Association for Student Judicial Affairs; Duke University Council on Women's Studies; the NASPA Inter-association Task Force on Alcohol; Jesuit Association on Student Personnel Administrators; National Association of Student Personnel Administrators; National Association for Women in Education; and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

I am very pleased with the appointment of Dr. Rue. She is an energetic, innovative, creative, student-focused professional who can facilitate change, generate synergies and work collaboratively within and across departmental lines. She also shares a value at the heart of UC San Diego: a commitment to shared governance in support of the University's strategic vision.

My sincere thanks to the search committee, which I co-chaired with Sixth College Provost Gabriele Wienhausen, for the members' extraordinary efforts to conduct a national search on an accelerated timeline. I appreciate, as well, the input from members of the campus community who attended the Vice Chancellor - Student Affairs candidate forums.

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Rue to UC San Diego.
