SUBJECT:    Appointment of Campus Sustainability Coordinator

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Maggie Souder as the new campus Sustainability Coordinator. Ms. Souder will serve as a point of contact and assist in UC San Diego's environmental efforts to foster a culture of sustainability among students, faculty, and staff and encourage collaboration and participation within the campus community.

Ms. Souder is responsible for identifying and prioritizing areas for sustainability efforts in campus operations, strategic sustainability planning, supporting the Advisory Committee on Sustainability (ACS), and promoting partnerships between academic and operational departments to further campus sustainability goals. Ms. Souder will work closely with departments, facility planning committees and design teams to assist with implementation of UC and campus policies regarding green building practices in new construction, major renovations, and in existing buildings, as well as serve as liaison to UC Office of the President to ensure campus compliance with sustainability policies and annual reporting requirements.

After earning her bachelor's degree in environmental science at UC Riverside, Ms. Souder embarked on a 24-year career developing and managing environmental programs, including hazardous materials management, regulatory compliance, environmental remediation, air permitting and emissions reporting, and development of new campus-wide sustainability programs. While at UCR, she cultivated sustainability partnerships with local government agencies and businesses and served as a member of the Inland Empire Green Building Council Branch Steering Committee as well as chairing the City of Riverside Recycling Committee.

In fulfilling her role as Campus Sustainability Coordinator, Ms. Souder will continue to cultivate professional relationships with individuals and departments across the UC system and engage campus and community leaders to establish UC San Diego as a sustainability leader at the regional, state, national, and international levels by increasing awareness of our environmental successes and accomplishments. Her expertise working with diverse groups within the environmental resource management field will assist her in developing, implementing, and evaluating comprehensive sustainability, energy management, and resource conservation programs to expand campus sustainability efforts.

Please join me in welcoming Ms. Souder to UC San Diego.
