SUBJECT:    Transportation and Parking Planning

The draft report, Parking and Transportation Needs at the University of California, San Diego 2006-07 to 2012-13, produced by staff of the offices of Campus Planning and Transportation and Parking Services, is available for review online at http://parking.ucsd.edu. The report, and the associated briefing to the Transportation Policy Committee, provides a framework for discussing campus transportation and parking planning through 2012-13. To learn more about student priorities, please refer to the Undergraduate Student Experience and Satisfaction (USES) Report located at http://studentresearch.ucsd.edu/satisfaction.

Based on the most recent enrollment plans available from the Office of the President, the campus will experience significant growth in student enrollment in the next five years. Commensurate growth in faculty, staff, and health care patients and other campus visitors will also occur. If no action is taken, growth in the campus population and loss of existing parking spaces due to construction will reduce the number of available parking spaces below the campus standard by 2012-13.

This shortfall may be addressed through expanded alternative transportation programs, policy changes regarding parking permit availability, and/or construction of additional parking. In the context of the opportunities and challenges that growth will present to the campus, I invite you to review the draft report and comment at the http://parking.ucsd.edu website. Please provide your comments by January 30.

Consultation with the student, faculty, and staff representatives who comprise the Transportation Policy Committee is an important element of the planning process, as is receiving, evaluating, and, when appropriate, adopting suggestions from the whole campus community. To that end, your comments on all aspects of this report are welcomed. You are also invited to attend one of the following forums to learn more and discuss these issues:
