ACADEMIC SENATE MEMBERS

SUBJECT:    Appointment of Associate Faculty Director of the
Programs Abroad Office

It is with great pleasure that I announce the appointment of Dr. Paula Levin, Senior Lecturer SOE and Graduate Advisor in Education Studies, as the Associate Faculty Director of the Programs Abroad Office, effective August 1, 2008.

Dr. Levin, who received her Ph.D. in Anthropology from UC San Diego, has conducted research on language, schooling and culture in the United States, as well as in French Polynesia and Papua, New Guinea. She has consulted widely on a number of projects, including the Center for the Development of Early Education in Honolulu, the Native Hawaiian Library Project, the Children's Television Workshop, and the Ho'opa Ola Project. Affiliated with the faculty of UC San Diego's Department of Anthropology since 1988 and the Human Development Program since 1995, Dr. Levin began her association with Education Studies (formerly the Teacher Education Program) in 1988, and served as Interim Director of Education Studies earlier this year. She was the recipient of an Academic Senate Teaching Award in 2000.

Associate Director Levin joins the Director of the Programs Abroad Office, David Mares, Professor of Political Science and Adjunct Professor, School of International Relations and Pacific Studies, in promoting the academic integration of study abroad course work into the college and departmental programs. The faculty directors play a central role in UC San Diego's international programs, which are being strengthened and expanded, and include the Education Abroad Program (EAP), the Opportunities Abroad Program (OAP), and UC San Diego Faculty-led Global Seminars.

Please join me in congratulating Associate Director Levin on her appointment to this important position.
