ALL ACADEMICS AND STAFF AT UC SAN DIEGO ALL STUDENTS AT UC SAN DIEGO
Once again, UC San Diego community is joining forces to benefit our students in the 13th annual Chancellor’s Challenge 5K Run/Walk for Scholars. I am tremendously proud to lead the challenge again this year and I personally invite you to participate in this activity on Friday, October 17, 2008. Since its founding in 1996, the Chancellor’s Challenge 5K has raised more than $1.9 million in scholarship funding to help highly motivated undergraduates attend UC San Diego. This year, for every $50,000 raised, I will add $5,000 and will match new and increased gifts with discretionary funds up to $40,000. Day of race check-in begins at 10:30 a.m. The Chancellor’s Challenge 5K Run/Walk will start at 12:15 p.m. from the North Campus Field, adjacent to RIMAC, and continue on a course that weaves through campus. Participants may run or walk the 5K course. Please contact Dave Koch at (858) 822-5260 to discuss requests for alternative accessibility arrangements or accommodations. Participants who are registered may pick up their bib number and t-shirt on Thursday, October 16 between the hours of 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. at RIMAC. To register and pay online, access payroll deduction forms to support scholarships, and for more information about this exciting event, please visit the Chancellor’s Challenge 5K web site at www.ucsd.edu/5k. If you are not inclined to run or walk the 5K, but would like to be a part of this fun event, volunteers are needed. Please send an email to: pvansise@ucsd.edu to sign up as a volunteer. In the spirit of broad campus involvement in the Chancellor’s Challenge 5K Run/Walk for Scholars, I am approving two hours of administrative leave with pay on the day of the event. Supervisors may allow two hours of release time for staff to participate as long as the absence does not infringe upon the performance of required job duties or patient care. Your participation is a great example of your ongoing commitment to UC San Diego and our students. I look forward to seeing you on October 17 – rain or shine.
