ALL ACADEMICS AND STAFF AT UCSD

SUBJECT:    World AIDS Day 2008 on December 1

UC San Diego will honor World AIDS Day on Monday, December 1, 2008 as a special day to focus attention on the impact that HIV/AIDS has had in the San Diego community, the nation and the world.

UC San Diego will display three sections of the AIDS Memorial Quilt in the Price Center East Ballroom from 7 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. The AIDS Memorial Quilt is a poignant memorial, a powerful tool for use in preventing new HIV infections, and the largest ongoing community arts project in the world. On display will be sections of the Quilt that have emerged from San Diego organizations and individuals as San Diegans have responded to the AIDS crisis, both in the early years of the epidemic and through present day. UCSD will sponsor a number of other events in recognition of World AIDS Day including a panel of youth living with HIV, stories and testimonials from physicians and students who have travelled to Africa to combat the pandemic, film screenings, rapid HIV testing on Library Walk, and red ribbon distribution throughout campus.

For those employees who will participate in World AIDS Day activities, I am approving one hour of administrative leave with pay. Supervisors may allow one hour of release time for staff to participate as long as the absence does not infringe upon the performance of required job duties or patient care.

World AIDS Day events are co-sponsored by the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Resource Center, the Student Health Center, Student Health Advocates, Associated Students (AS), the Librarians Association of the University of California - SD Diversity Committee, the LGBT Staff & Faculty Association, the HIV Neurobehavrioral Research Center (HNRC), the Anti Viral Research Center (AVRC), the Arusha Project, the Owen Clinic, the HIV Youth Council, Environment, Health and Safety, University Centers, Face AIDS, Housing, Dining and Hospitality, Counseling and Psychological Services, the UC San Diego Bookstore, OASIS, the Loft, Equal Opportunity/Staff Affirmative Action, the UCSD Libraries, the Women's Center, the Cross-Cultural Center and many committed individuals throughout the University community.

Information regarding all of the World AIDS Day activities at UC San Diego may be found at http://worldAIDSday.ucsd.edu.
