SUBJECT:	Appointment of Assistant Dean for Student Affairs,
	Office of Graduate Studies

I am pleased to announce the appointment of April Bjornsen as Assistant Dean for Student Affairs in the Office of Graduate Studies (OGS). April succeeds Tim Johnston who retired in June 2008.

As head of the OGS Student Affairs unit, April will be responsible for: outreach, recruitment, and diversity; graduate admissions; advising on grievances, conflict resolution, misconduct and other non-academic issues; external fund development and grant direction; coordination with other campus units on matters relating to housing, health insurance, career advising, counseling, sexual harassment, and collective bargaining; and planning for orientation and commencement.

April joined UCSD in 2004 to oversee our graduate admissions process, and has made major contributions in this sphere. In addition, she has served as Interim Assistant Dean since July 2008, and has ensured a smooth transition and continued momentum of many important initiatives.
