The Institute for International, Comparative, and Area Studies (IICAS)
and the Worldwide Universities Network (WUN) are pleased to announce a
competition for international collaborative research. Individuals and
groups are invited to submit proposals for conferences, workshops,
research groups meetings, exploratory research initiatives, and research
projects. Through this initiative, IICAS and WUN seek to engage the UCSD
faculty in new international collaborations within the WUN partnership,
opening up novel areas of research and deepening collaborative
partnerships.
UCSD is one of the founding members of the Worldwide Universities
Network (WUN), an international alliance of higher-education
institutions. WUN provides support for research networking and
collaboration; graduate student and faculty exchanges; and
graduate-level education initiatives and distributed learning. The WUN
member universities are:

University of Leeds University of Washington
Nanjing University University of Wisconsin-Madison
Pennsylvania State University University of York

Individual UCSD faculty members, or groups of faculty, may apply for
these IICAS-WUN Collaborative Research Grants. In addition to the UCSD
PI(s), and participating faculty of any U.S. or foreign university, the
project must involve collaboration with faculty (either as co-PI or as
participant) from at least one additional WUN partner institution.
GRANT AMOUNT: $5,000 to $22,500 for use over a period of 1-3 years
PROPOSAL FORMAT:
1. Cover sheet with name of PI(s) of project; project title and
departmental affiliation(s); WUN partner institution(s); UCSD contact
information, title of the project; amount requested; proposed start and
end dates of the project.
2. Statement of purpose, including the project's significance, proposed
activities and expected outcomes.
3. Designated Principal Investigator(s) & other faculty participants
4. Brief biographical information on faculty participants.
5. Project plan/literature review/method/timeline (maximum length: 3 pages).
6. Itemized budget, including information on other sources of funding,
and on the capacity to raise extramural funds for the project.
Maximum length: 7 pages
DEADLINE: May 19, 2008 at 4:00pm.
CRITERIA FOR SELECTION:
The IICAS Grant Review Committee will give preference to proposals that
meet the following criteria:
* Emphasis on international topics and issues.
* An interdisciplinary, inter-divisional and/or comparative subject.
(Cross-regional projects are particularly encouraged; multi-country
comparative projects also satisfy this criterion.)
* Intellectual originality and breadth.
* The extent to which the initiative deepens collaborative relationships
within the WUN partnership.
* Number of faculty and graduate student participants at UCSD.
* Clear plan for a publishable research result.
* Promise of drawing creatively on collaborative opportunities and
potential to secure extramural funding.
SUBMISSION OF PROPOSALS:
Submit four (4) copies of the complete proposal package by MAY 19, 2008
at 4:00pm. Please staple each copy of your proposal package separately.

NOTIFICATION AND ACCEPTANCE:
Awards will be announced in early June 2008. Initial notifications will
be sent by email. Notice of acceptance must be received no later than
June 16, 2008. Failure to notify IICAS of intent to accept the award by
this date will result in forfeiture of the award.
DISPOSITION OF PROPOSALS:
All materials submitted for this competition become the property of
IICAS. IICAS assumes no responsibility for retaining or returning
materials submitted for this competition.
REPORTING REQUIREMENTS:
Recipients must agree to acknowledge assistance from IICAS and the WUN
in any event announcements, publicity, thesis, publication, or other
product that results from IICAS-WUN supported research. Each award
recipient must also submit a brief report on the use of the grant.
